Free Space Park Leicester seminar to focus on seismic waves

Experts at the forefront of techniques to locate the sources of underground explosions on Earth and in space will share their knowledge at a free event at Space Park Leicester.

Specialists working in forensic seismology use seismic waves to identify underground explosions and other sources of seismic signals, such as earthquakes, submarine disasters, mine collapses and underwater explosions.

A leading expert in the field, AWE Forensic Seismologist David Green, will deliver a talk next week called ‘Listening for nuclear tests: What can seismology tell us?’ as part of the Space Park Conversations programme of free seminars.

During the event, David will discuss how seismic waves are generated by underground nuclear tests, how the waves propagate through Earth and how experts detect this wave motion at thousands of kilometres from an explosion site.

He said: “During this Space Park Conversations event we’ll look back at the development of forensic seismology and discuss the techniques that have helped improve confidence in our ability to identify and locate underground explosions globally.

“We will also discover how such techniques have been used to understand other sources of seismic waves, including submarine disasters, underwater gas pipeline explosions and accidental industrial detonations.

“Finally, we will consider efforts to record seismic signals on both the Moon and Mars.”

Space Park Conversations free public seminars feature talks from experts which are designed to foster discussion and collaboration on topics related to space exploration and technology.

The event with David Green will take place at the University of Leicester’s £100 million science and innovation park at 11am on Wednesday, June 11.
