Representatives of Leicestershire’s new Royal Navy ship explore Space Park Leicester
Representatives from Leicestershire’s new Royal Navy ship, HMS Daring, have met with organisations working at the forefront of the UK space sector during a visit to Space Park Leicester.
HMS Daring Captain, Commander Andrew Platt RN, and Weapon Engineer Officer, Lieutenant Commander Adam Thompson RN, visited the University of Leicester’s £100m space research, innovation and teaching hub today to explore its facilities and learn about the exciting research and projects its community of businesses are engaged in.
Cdr Platt and Lt Cdr Thompson were joined on the visit by The Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Mike Kapur OBE CStJ; Leicestershire Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Colonel Dr Richard Hurwood and Leicestershire Deputy Lieutenant, Lieutenant Colonel Sir Anthony Charles Richards KCVO DL.
Space Park Leicester Chief Executive Officer Will Wells said: “It was a historic moment for people in Leicester and Leicestershire when it was confirmed last year that they would have a Royal Navy ship to call their own after ties were cemented with HMS Daring. The ship has been undergoing a major regeneration programme and when she is deployed around the world she will fly the flag for Leicester and Leicestershire.
“It was a privilege for us to help further strengthen the links between the city and the county and HMS Daring during this visit.
“We were delighted to show Cdr Platt and Lt Cdr Thompson and other distinguished guests around Space Park Leicester so they could learn firsthand how our community of partners, businesses and researchers are pushing the boundaries of space exploration, satellite technology and Earth observation to benefit society and the UK economy.”
The visitors also presented the venue with an HMS Daring medal and had the chance to meet with Space Park Leicester industry partners AWE, CGI and Shield Space.
