Inspirational children’s activity book aims to inspire the next generation of space scientists

An engaging space activity book designed to spark curiosity and imagination in young learners has been launched by a University of Leicester student.
Offering an exciting and accessible introduction to the wonders of our solar system while showcasing the University of Leicester’s global contribution to space science “Let’s Learn About Space!” is a vibrant 68-page resource created in line with the National Curriculum.
Aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils aged 7–11, the downloadable book combines colourful illustrations, clear explanations and interactive activities to bring complex scientific ideas to life in a way that resonates with both classrooms and families at home.
Readers are introduced in an easily digestible way to fascinating concepts such as how the Earth moves, the different types of space rocks, and the composition of the planets, alongside details about space research happening in Leicester that connects directly to real missions exploring our universe today.
Francis Watts, who is studying Physics at the University of Leicester and creator of the book, said:
“The idea was to develop an activity book that could be easily downloaded and used both in schools and at home, combining games with informative content about stars and planets. By making it interactive and accessible, I hope it helps spark curiosity and encourages more young people to explore space science further.”
The book explains how the University of Leicester has contributed to major international missions, such as the XMM-Newton X-ray telescope, the Bepi Colombo mission to Mercury, the Rosalind Franklin Rover, due to launch in 2028, and the SMILE mission, planned for launch in 2026.
Francis added: “By combining activities with real examples of missions and Leicester’s involvement, I hope children can see that space isn’t just something far away –
it’s something they could be part of in the future.”
“Let’s Learn About Space!” is a free downloadable resource available here.
