US deep tech sensor company opens new overseas office at Space Park Leicester

A US deep-tech company which designs and builds adaptive imaging sensors to meet the toughest demands of the space, defence, astronomy and commercial markets has opened its new overseas office at Space Park Leicester.

SAAZ Micro’s adaptive imaging sensors deliver space, airborne and terrestrial imaging superiority for the US, India, Europe, other Allies, and global commercial partners and the company officially unveiled its new SAAZ Micro UK Ltd office at the University of Leicester’s £100m space research, innovation and teaching hub on Thursday.

The company – whose clients include NASA, the US government, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), US defence primes, the Indian Space Research Organisation and European and international commercial companies – can now bring its latest technologies to the UK thanks to its presence in Leicester.

SAAZ Founder and CEO Atul Joshi said:

“We intend to accelerate the development of newer technologies critical to the UK by looking out for every opportunity to partner with the space ecosystem here on the development of advanced sensing applications.”

“SAAZ Micro UK Ltd will aim to design and manufacture advanced infrared / ultraviolet / visible / neuromorphic sensors, camera systems and read-out electronics for space, astronomy, terrestrial and defence applications at Space Park Leicester.”

SAAZ Chief of Staff Vish Madhugiri added: “Space Park Leicester is a leading UK space innovation hub and has many excellent facilities under one roof, including electronics testing labs, satellite integration, the highest rated clean rooms and key technical talent for the design and fabrication of imaging sensors. It’s the perfect base from which to expand our UK and European sensor footprint and develop sophisticated design and manufacturing technologies to serve the UK and wider European markets.”

SAAZ appointed Ruchira Naik as its International Operations and Legal Affairs Manager in September and she is working with Space Park Leicester and the SAAZ US team to quickly expand the SAAZ UK operations in Leicester.

Ruchira said: “Having spent a few months here already, I am confident that being in this space ecosystem will enable us to co-create and innovate with Space Park Leicester and its associated companies.”

One of the reasons SAAZ chose Space Park Leicester for its UK base is its links to the University of Leicester. SAAZ wants to hire PhD students and would like to give Masters students the opportunity to work on projects lasting between 6 and 12 months to help further develop new capabilities and talents at the University of Leicester.

SAAZ is also keen to co-opt Space Park Leicester team members to enable transfer of technologies between the two organisations, and the two organisations have already kicked-off a major new project.

Space Park Leicester Head of Commercial and Innovation Vinay Patel said: “We have worked  with SAAZ in the past when it successfully delivered a detector for us that we needed to be turned around in a very short period of time.”

“It is a fantastic company to work with and we are delighted that they feel Space Park Leicester is aligned with their strengths and that they can clearly see how utiliising our facilities will be of benefit to them.”

“With the Government’s new space strategy, SAAZ will expand opportunities to seed new technologies including neuromorphic sensing, lidar, deep space optical communications and areas related to advanced short, medium and long wave infrared sensing and we’re looking forward to broadening and deepening our collaboration with them.”
